reached the summit
so i was pretty down-and-out today. i hate to admit it, but when my boyfriend leaves to go home (he lives in another state) i get pretty bummed. i perked up my spirits a bit early by calling my mom, but that was only a temporary high. i knew that if i could just accomplish something today i'd feel much better. so after vetoing my professional statement, my portfolio, and any reading, if occurred to me that now was as good of a time as any to paint over a canvas salvaged from my roommate's spring cleaning. the canvas was originally painted a soft blue gradient with an orange lighting bolt. i knew i wanted something blue-green (more blue than green) and i was leaning towards painting the whole thing one color and using a palette knife to apply the color in rough swatches. painting over the lighting bolt proved to be a challenge. it was much more raised than the background. so instead of fighting it, i went with it. i applied some white and started to spread it with the knife. instantly mountain tops formed. then i hoped to get in some fluffy white clouds, but that was a no-go. then i thought of a summit flag flapping in the wind. i think it turned out pretty snazzy.
